Scots families switch to healthier diets

FAMILIES are eating healthier diets and turning their backs on fatty foods, according to the latest survey of the nation’s eating and shopping habits.


Less whole milk, and fewer soft and fizzy drinks, were bought over the past year and high fat foods like cheese also showed a decline in popularity, with fruit and vegetables on the increase.


The family food study by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) revealed significant changes over the past year and marked differences in the habits of different parts of the UK.


It found a reduction of 17% in the consumption of whole milk in 2004/5. The amount of potatoes (fresh and processed, including chips) fell by 5%. Alcohol bought for drinking at home was also down by 3.7%. However, between 1994 and 2005, alcohol purchasing increased by... read more...
